Drop(box) it like it's hot!

For the speedgeek session, I showed how I was using Dropbox in my class.

It all started when I was looking for a way to quickly and efficiently get files from the iPads to my computer.  One of the biggest benefits of using the iPads in my Spanish classroom is their ability to almost effortlessly record audio and video.  It greatly facilitates assessment of  speaking tasks, provides a digital record for student e-portfolios and creates a permanent record that can be used for reflection.

However, I soon realized that our iPads were not set up for easy file transfer.  Typically, an iPad has a single user and that user associates an email account with the apps on the iPad.  Because the students cannot easily do that, I was looking for apps that had other sharing options.  That's when I discovered Dropbox.  At its simplest essence, it's an cloud-based file storage system.

I gave the students my user id and password and had them upload audio files from Voice Recorder HD to my Dropbox.  I then had the files to assess and I can easily get the files back to the students.  I hope they can then upload those files to their e-portfolios.

After using Dropbox I'm left with several questions to consider:

  • Would it be possible to create a Dropbox account for my class?

  • Could it replace the Student Shared Drive?

  • Can I set up sharing restrictions that would protect the files from being accidentally deleted from the Dropbox folder?

  • Could I use the Voice Recorder HD to record feeback for the students?

  • Any other ideas?

Finally, a cheap ploy.  If you think you'd like an account, use this link and we'll each get 250MB of extra storage space!  https://db.tt/00H0nzbW
